IU Earns 22 Swims at Day Two of Counsilman

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Indiana swimming grabbed 22 swims (10 championship, nine consolation and three bonus consolation) in Saturday's finals after the second preliminary session of the 2005 FINIS Counsilman Classic June 11 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
"I am feeling very good after this morning's performances," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "We are seeded nicely for tonight, and almost everyone made it to additional swims. With how hard the team is training in the off-season, I am pleased that we can come here and find some positive reinforcement from the student-athlete's hard work. We are also racing well and are setting up a nice upcoming season."
In the men's 200 LCM butterfly, rising sophomore Ryan McNeill advanced to the championship final with the fifth-fastest qualifying time of 2:07.60, which also eclipse the junior national standard. Additionally, Matt Jensen will join his classmate with a time of 2:09.15 for eighth place coming out of the preliminary session. Meanwhile, rising freshman Alec Haley will compete in the consolation final with a 14th-place 2:10.18. Also swimming from the Hoosier contingent, rising freshman Norman Ference placed 30th with a 2:16.80.
In the women's 50 LCM freestyle, rising sophomore Leila Vaziri claimed the third-fastest qualifying time with a 27.03, which cleared the junior national cut time. Additionally, classmate Annica Lofstedt will join Vaziri in the championship final after notching the sixth-fastest time of the morning with a 27.35. In other Hoosier action, rising sophomore Clarissa Wentworth moved into the bonus consolation by clocking a 27.76 to tie for the 19th-best time of the morning. Meanwhile, rising junior Doherty Colgin tied for 44th with a 28.46.
In the men's 50 LCM freestyle, rising sophomore Lee Houchin pushed himself into the consolation final by tying for 13th place with a 24.61, while redshirt freshman Nick Walkotten will join him with a 16th-place 24.74. Meanwhile, rising sophomore Drew Ossakow took 24th with a 25.18 to move into the bonus consolation heat this evening. Also in action for the Hoosiers, rising junior Kevin Swander finished 52nd with a 29.84.
In the women's 100 LCM backstroke, Vaziri seized a consolation spot with a ninth-place 1:06.24, which cleared the Open time standard. Additionally, rising sophomore Susanna Ernst placed 26th with a 1:09.28.
On the men's side of the 100 back, Walkotten continued his solid Counsilman performance with a third-place qualifying time of 58.93 that also surpassed the Open cut. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers also demonstrated strength in the event as both rising freshman Todd Patrick and rising junior Mike Jones earned berths in the championship final. Patrick finished sixth with an Open-cut time of 59.60, while Jones cleared the junior national time with a seventh-place 1:00.00.
Additionally, Houchin will swim in the consolation heat with a 12th-place 1:01.18, while incoming recruit A.J. Miller placed 13th with a 1:01.55. Also for the Hoosiers, rising sophomore Scott Tanner placed 41st after clocking a 1:06.32.
In the women's 200 LCM breaststroke, rising junior Kristen Bradley seized a spot in the consolation final with a 12th-place 2:44.99,
In the men's 200 breast, Indiana went two-three in qualifying as Haley secured the second-fastest time with a 2:27.31, while Swander came in just behind him at 2:28.59. Meanwhile, Miller advanced to the consolation heat with a ninth-place 2:31.75, while fellow recruit Tyler Boulden will join him as the 16th-fastest swimmer of the morning with a 2:35.33.
In the women's 400 LCM freestyle, Bradley found her way into the consolation final by tying for 12th place with a 4:26.49, while Colgin will swim in the bonus heat with a 21st-place 4:30.87 followed by rising junior Lauren Torpey in 22nd with a 4:31.30. Meanwhile, Wentworth finished in 36th with a 4:34.33.
In the men's 400 free, rising freshman John Kevin Koehler earned a spot in the consolation final with a 10th-place 4:08.12, while McNeill will join him after an 11th-place 4:08.66. Jensen also will swim in the bonus consolation with a 17th-place 4:12.47. In 27th place, rising sophomore Paul Sigfusson posted a 4:14.63.
