IU Inks Three Additional Women

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Ray Looze and the IU swimming and diving program announced the signing of three more student-athletes for the 2005-06 campaign. Megan Lonergan (Davenport, Iowa/Bettendorf), Abbey Mitchell (Mt. Vernon, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and Stephanie Weeks (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North Vigo) will join already-inked recruits Kristin Cihoski (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Abby Cooper (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Caitlin Heyman (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall), Sarah Jones (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central), Allison Kay (Strongsville, Ohio/Magnificat), Katie Mitsch (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown), Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), Sarah Stockwell (Kent, Wash./Kentlake), Andrea Weintraub (Encino, Calif./Milken Community) and Kristy Winck (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) for the upcoming season.
Lonergan, a two-time All American from Davenport, Iowa, led Bettendorf as team captain her senior season after four years with the program. During her time at BHS, her squad claimed a pair of state championships. Individually, Lonergan snared four state titles in the 500 free, while snagging second in the 200 free in each of those meets. Additionally, Lonergan earned District Athlete of the Year honors as a junior and a senior and was named the BHS Female Athlete of the Year. As a 13-year member of the Bettendorf Swim Club, she traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, and San Antonio, Texas, for junior nationals. Scholastically, Lonergan garnered berths in the National Honor Society and the High Honor Roll. Meanwhile, Lonergan demonstrated musical ability in the orchestra by claiming first chair her senior year.
"Megan is an addition to our program that has an outstanding work ethic," Looze said. "She will score points at the Big Ten conference meet in the distance events."
Mitchell, a four-time letterwinner from Mt. Vernon, Ind., led Mt. Vernon to a 51-6 dual meet record. Additionally, her team picked up three section titles during her prep career. As a senior, Mitchell took 15th in the 100 breast at state and 13th in the 200 medley relay. Meanwhile, she was the High School Heisman nominee from MVHS. As a junior, Mitchell finished fifth in the 100 breast at state. During her sophomore season, Mitchell placed eighth in the 100 breast at state. She also earned all-conference all four years. Academically, Mitchell graduated with honors and was a member of DECA, YoungLife, Junior Civilian, the Student-Athletic Club and SADD.
"Abbey is a versatile swimmer," Looze said. "She has the ability to develop into a Big Ten point scorer as a freshman."
Weeks, a multi-sport athlete from Terre Haute, Ind., led North Vigo to an undefeated season in 2003 and a conference championship. In 2005, Weeks participated at states in the 100 fly and 200 free relay. Additionally, she won the 100 fly sectional championship that year. In 2004, Weeks swam at state and helped her 200 free relay to a Wabash Valley Classic title. In 2003, Weeks helped the 200 free relay squad to the Noblesville Invite title. As a member of the Terre Haute Torpedoes, Weeks competed at the Seymour Coca Cola Classic. In the classroom, Weeks earned a berth in the National Honor Society and served in the Band/Choir Solo and Ensemble. She also earned the marching band outstanding mellophone award.
"Stephanie is a solid butterflyer from Terre Haute," Looze said. "She will be a great asset to us both in and out of the water."
