BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - It was nothing but spectacular for the Indiana women's soccer team tonight as it shutdown Memphis, 5-0, at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers were led with a balanced attack that saw sophomore Kristin Radcliffe netting two goals in the preseason exhibition match against the Tigers.
"We were fantastic on both sides of the field," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We kept it clean on one end and were able to net five goals on the other. Our team has even managed to surprise me."
The Hoosiers netted their first goal with a flip throw-in from junior Megan Pipkens, who setup fellow teammate Carrie DeFreece for the goal at the 17:21 mark.
Again, the scoreboard moved in the Hoosiers favor as Radcliffe added her first of two goals on the night at 24:19 off an assist from freshman Molly Kruger and Pipkens.
"We played really hard and have been working all week in preparation for this match," Radcliffe said. "While I scored two tonight, we as a team were able to come from every angle. We can score from any position, and our midfielders and forwards were able to capitalize on our team's strength in that area."
IU's third goal came off the head of Pipkens, who also tallied two assists on the night. Pipkens received the opportunity off a corner kick from junior Ali Brown.
Radcliffe again found her way through the defense taking a ball from junior Lauren Dieter at the 32:17 mark to post her second goal of the evening. The Hoosiers would wrap-up the scoring drive with a goal near midfield from freshman Ashley Seib at 67:51. The freshman was able to chip the ball over Memphis' Isabel Briones between the pipes to give the Hoosiers their final score.
The Hoosiers were able to hold the Tigers to just four shots for the match, none of which made it near the hands of the IU goalies.
Lyon used every name on the roster, minus those who will begin the season coming off injuries, in the preseason win. Also finding time in front of the Hoosier net were senior Lauren Fabbro, sophomore Stacey Van Boxmeer and freshman Megan Reinhardt.
Leading the Tiger effort in front of the net was Briones, who posted five saves in the loss, while freshman forward Kylie Hayes footed three shots on the night.
IU again takes to the field as it finishes its preseason exhibition schedule against Valparaiso on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Armstrong Stadium, at noon.
