BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team finished its preseason schedule today remaining perfect by defeating Valparaiso, 2-0, at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. Indiana has yet to allow a goal, as it shutout Memphis in its first exhibition match on Friday night.
"I am happy with our second half of play," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We have to come out strong and start each game with a new approach. Valparaiso is a very physical and determined team. We did a good job of matching that intensity in the second half. Overall, I am pleased with our defensive play over these past two exhibition matches as we have not allowed a goal with few shots on goal."
The Crusaders came out strong in the first period holding the Hoosiers to just one shot within the first 25 minutes of play. IU would bounce back to finish the first half with seven total shots against Valparaiso's three. Indiana still remained deadlocked tied at 0-0 at the end of the first.
The Hoosiers, after a display of defense from both teams, would find the net at the 65:18 mark behind the work of junior midfielder Ali Brown and sophomore midfielder Lindsay McCarthy. Brown tallied her second assist in as many matches, while McCarthy posted a goal for the first time off a throw-in from Brown.
In a match that saw two yellow cards against the Crusaders, freshman midfielder Molly Kruger capitalized off Valparaiso's aggressive play. At 81:18, Kruger passed Valparaiso's goalie to net the Hoosier's final goal off a penalty kick.
"I think we came out strong in the second half, but have to have more intensity overall on the field," Kruger said. "The more we have a chance to play together, the more we will get used to each other's style of play."
While the Hoosiers began slow on offense, they came out strong and determined in the second half posting 12 shots during the game's final period, totaling 19 on the day.
IU's defense held the Crusaders to six shots on the day, a team that tallied 10 in a losing effort in its first exhibition match against Grand Valley State.
The Hoosiers will kickoff the 2005 season with matches against Loyola Marymount on Friday, Aug. 26, and Southern California on Sunday, Aug. 29, in Los Angeles, Calif., at 1 p.m., on both days.
