Dubuque & DeGain Into Quarterfinal Round

ST. LOUIS - In the second session of the 2005 NCAA Wrestling Championship, at the Savvis Center, the Indiana wrestling team pushed senior Pat DeGain and junior Joe Dubuque into the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket.
DeGain posted a 12-5 decision over Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg in the heavyweight class. The IU senior led 2-0 after the first period with a body-lock takedown at the 22-second mark of the frame. He then posted a takedown and escape to open the second stanza. Spaid scored on a pair of escapes, but DeGain would post three more takedowns en route to the second round conquest.
The Clarkston, Mich., product pushed his overall mark to 32-5. He has now won 19 of his last 20 contests.
Dubuque, seeded 5th at 125-pounds, bested Iowa State's Grant Nakamura, 3-2, in the second round of the championship bracket. The match headed into the third period tied, 2-2, after Dubuque sandwiched a takedown in between a pair of Nakamura escapes. The Bloomfield, N.J., product secured the bout by escaping the riding Nakamura with 34 seconds remaining in the final period.
Dubuque improved to 26-3 and 2-0 at the NCAA Championships.
At 165-pounds, junior Max Dean lost an 8-2 decision to Iowa's Mark Perry in the second round of the main bracket. Perry scored a quick takedown to start the match and grab a 2-0 advantage. After 45 seconds of riding time, Dean earned an escape to cut the score in half. Perry posted a takedown and a pair of escapes, and registered almost five minutes of riding time en route to the win.
Dean is now 25-14 and 1-1 at the NCAAs.
At 174-pounds, junior Brady Richardson lost a major decision to Ben Askren of Missouri by the margin of 9-0 in the main draw. Askren posted an escape and garnered a takedown 70 seconds into the second period. Richardson chose neutral to start the third period and Askren scored another takedown and a leg turk; he also added a riding time point for the final spread.
The Vincennes, Ind., native fell to 24-7 on the year and 1-1 at the Championship.
Junior Any Rios lost a close 11-8 decision to Iowa State's Kurt Backes, the No. 2 seed, at 184-lbs in the main bracket. Backes opened a 7-1 lead with a trio of takedowns and an escape. Rio then posted an escape and a single-leg takedown to shave the margin to 7-4.
After a Backes' injury timeout, Rios started on bottom for the beginning of the third period. He registered an escape and immediately shot in on a double and evened the match, 7-7, with a single-leg takedown. Backes escaped the Rios takedown and scored one of his own off a single-leg to grab a 10-7 lead.
Backes was called for stalling on top and Rio escaped to make the score 10-8. Backes hung onto Rio's leg, as time expired and totaled one more point for riding time.
Rios is now 25-18 and 1-1 at the NCAAs.
Sophomore Isaac Knable will face Quincy Osborn of Minnesota, at 149-pounds, and redshirt freshman Brandon Becker battles Lock Haven's Seth Martin, at 157-pounds, in the second round consolation bracket on Friday.
The third session will begin on Friday, March 18, at 11:30 a.m.
