Hoosiers Garner Five Wins During Session I

ST. LOUIS - In the first session of the 2005 NCAA Wrestling Championships, at the Savvis Center, the Indiana wrestling team advanced five wrestlers into the second round of the championship bracket. Senior Pat DeGain, juniors Joe Dubuque, Brady Richardson and Andy Rios, along with redshirt freshman Max Dean all moved on with victories Thursday afternoon.
Dubuque, seeded 5th at 125-pounds, earned a 13-5 major decision win over freshman Mike Sees of Bloomsburg. The Bloomfield, N.J., native is now 25-3 on the year and will meet Iowa State's Grant Nakamura tonight in the second round.
At 165-pounds, Dean downed Sacred Heart's sophomore Sherwood Fendryk by an 8-5 decision. The IU grappler took at 2-0 lead with a take down in the first period. Fendryk cut the margin in half with 23 seconds remaining in the stanza with an escape.
Dean chose bottom to start the second frame and pushed the lead back to 3-1 with an escape. At the beginning of the third period, Dean elevated a single and scored, but Dean responded and put Fendryk on his back for a one count. Fendryk would escape, but would give a few seconds later, and Dean secured the match on riding time.
The West Chester, Ohio, native is now 25-13 on the year and will face Iowa's Mark Perry in his next bout.
Richardson got the best of Fresno State's freshman Chris Gifford with a 5-2 decision at 174-pounds. The Vincennes, Ind., product used a double-leg takedown across the mat to take a 2-0 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the first period.
Richardson earned another takedown, after Gifford posted his first point with an escape. Gifford scored again on an escape, but Richardson captured the match with a final riding point.
He moved to 24-6 on the year and will face Ben Askren of Missouri in the next session.
Rios claimed a 14-6 major decision over Chris Ressa of Rutgers at 184-lbs. Rios took an early 4-0 lead in the match with a takedown and a near fall. With the score 4-2 in the second period, Rios pushed his advantage to 8-4 with a reversal and a takedown, around a pair of Ressa escape's. Two more takedowns and a riding time point sealed the match for Rios.
Rios is now 25-17 in the year and will battle Iowa State's Kurt Backes, the No. 2 seed, in this evening's next round.
DeGain, seeded 4th overall, upended junior Mike Faust of Virginia Tech with a 5-3 tiebreaker win. DeGain scored the first point of the match with an escape at 1:29 of the second period. At the beginning of the second period, Faust chose bottom and earned a quick escape to even the bout. Neither wrestler would score in the sudden victory period.
In the tiebreaker, Faust chose bottom and earned an escape by turning and facing on the edge of the mat. In the second tiebreaker period, DeGain chose bottom, earned an escape as the period ended, and squared the contest at 2-2
Neither wrestler could score in the second sudden victory period. In the next tiebreaker stanza, DeGain chose bottom and earned another quick escape, as did Faust in the beginning of the next tiebreaker. With the match even at 3-3, DeGain spun behind Faust for the takedown and a spot in the next round.
DeGain pushed his record to 31-5 and will battle Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg tonight.
Sophomore Isaac Knable lost his first round match to Patrick Williams of Arizona State at 149-pounds.
Williams opened the match with a takedown and two back points to take an early 4-0 lead. Knable got an escape with 1:30 left in the first period, but Williams got another takedown to make the contest 6-2.
Knable choose top to start the second period. Williams got an escape and then a takedown, but Knable would respond with an escape of his own. Williams got in on Knable's leg and was able to garner a single leg takedown. Knable responded with quick escape, but Williams would get another takedown with two seconds left in the second period.
Each wrestler was awarded separate penalty points to bring the score to 14-4 with a minute left in the patch. Williams took Knable down to his back and then pinned him to capture the match at 6:40.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Becker lost a 13-7 decision to 12th-seeded senior Jim Medeiros of Fresno State at 157-pounds. Medeiros jumped out to an 8-1 lead with 30 seconds left in the first period and led 12-3 after the second frame. Becker was able to get a reversal at the beginning of the third period to make the bout 12-4.
Becker got a tilt for three more points, but Medeiros was able to hold on for the win with riding time. The Michleton, N.J., native is 27-12 on the season.
The second session will begin this evening at 6:30 p.m.
