BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - From time to time, junior Elaine Deppe will provide a diary of the off-season experience of an Indiana rower as well as her thoughts on what it is like to be a student at Indiana University.
Yesterday was freshman move-in day. This day is almost like Christmas for our team, because there are so many potential rowers that are just walking around, waiting to be found. We get really excited when we see a group of women walking around not really knowing what to do, because the campus is so big and can be overwhelming. It's not only fun talking to them about rowing and seeing if they're interested, but it's also exciting to help them out with questions about the campus and/or classes.
When I was a freshman, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Knowing how I felt back then, it makes it easier to relate to the new students and make them feel more at home. Our team prides itself in being a group of women from all over the country that come together as a family. Having that second family here at school really helps you out in your schoolwork and also typical life situations. I don't know if I would have made it this far in college without the other women on my team being there for me.
The team and I got to meet a lot of new freshman who we would love to come and be a part of our team. They all seem really eager to hear what we have to say, which makes us more psyched to go out and find more potential rowers!
