Wrestling Earns Academic Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University wrestlers Max Dean and Michael Simpson have each been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic team, the organization announced today. Simpson and Dean are the eighth and ninth Hoosiers, respectively, to be recognized by the NWCA for their work in the classroom. As a team, the Hoosiers ranked 27th in the nation in academic performance.
IU head coach Duane Goldman said that this honor exemplifies his program's primary objective.
"Our team's responsibility extends beyond the mat. They must perform in the classroom as well," Goldman said. "Michael and Max performed well in both areas, and it is great to see them get the recognition that they deserve."
Simpson, a fifth-year senior transfer from Arizona State majoring in sports management and sports administration, finished the 2004-05 season with a 25-10 record and a sixth place finish at 141 pounds in the Big Ten Championships. A knee injury suffered at the Big Ten meet prevented Simpson from moving on to the NCAA Championship.
Dean advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 165-pound weight division. Over the course of the season, the West Chester, Ohio, native and business major recorded a 26-14 ledger. Additionally, Dean picked up fifth place at the Big Ten Championship to earn his bid to the national title meet. Dean has been selected by the NCAA to represent IU at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference which is being held May 29 to June 2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The NCAA Leadership Conference Selection Committee received 1,166 nominations from 298 institutions and a total of 324 student-athletes were selected to attend the conference.
