Sept. 1, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- The Big Ten Conference has announced the league schedule for the 2006 women's basketball season. The slate for Indiana features games against five NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, including national runner-up Michigan State, Minnesota (Sweet 16), Ohio State (Sweet 16), Purdue (second round), and Penn State (first round). The Hoosiers also face two teams from the 2005 Postseason NIT, in Iowa and Illinois.
Indiana's first conference game kicks off on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m., when Iowa comes to town. Following their match up with the Hawkeyes, the Hoosiers are on the road for three of their next five games, with the back-to-back home contests coming against Purdue (Thursday, Jan. 5) and Minnesota (Monday, Jan. 9). IU has three-straight home games in early February (Ohio State, Feb. 5; Penn State, Feb. 9, Northwestern, Feb. 12). Following the home stint, IU finishes off the regular season with three-consecutive away games (Purdue, Feb. 19, Minnesota, Feb. 23, Iowa, Feb. 26).
The Indiana schedule features a home and home series with Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota and Ohio State. Big Ten teams appearing only once on the schedule are: Illinois (Bloomington on Jan. 26), Michigan (Bloomington on Jan. 22), Michigan State (East Lansing on Jan. 29), and Wisconsin (Madison on Feb. 2.)
With the finalization of the Big Ten schedule in place, the 2005-06 Hoosier schedule is now complete. Including non-conference teams, the Hoosiers will face 12 squads that made postseason appearances in 2004-05 (9 NCAA, 3 WNIT). IU is one of two schools in the nation (Oklahoma) to meet up with both the 2005 NCAA champion Baylor and national runner-up Michigan State during the regular season.
Additionally one of IU's conference match-ups will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago this season when Indiana takes on arch-rival Purdue in West Lafayette at 2 p.m. Bloomington's local station, WTIU, will also air several IU women's basketball games throughout the season. A schedule of these games will be announced at a later date.
With the summer days behind them, the Hoosiers are set to start preseason practices under the direction of their new head coach Sharon Versyp. Two IU players earned a chance to compete overseas as junior center Sarah McKay helped the Canadian National team to an 11th-place finish at the World University Games in Turkey and senior guard Cyndi Valentin led the Big Ten Foreign All-Stars in scoring with 15.0 points per game in Belgium and Holland. Valentin also will embark on another trip to the Dominican Republic to compete with the Puerto Rican National Team at the FIBA Games that begin on Sept. 14.
All of the Indiana women's basketball games can be heard locally on WHCC (105.1) with Jeremy Gray calling all of the action. For more information on purchasing tickets, call 1-866-IUSPORTS
