2V8 Knocks Off Minnesota For First Big Ten Triumph

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana University women's rowing squad enjoyed a competitive day of racing at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River April 16 in Columbus, Ohio. The second varsity 8 combo of senior Sarah Meyer (cox), sophomore Laura Stebbins (stroke), sophomore Colleen Ryan, sophomore Lanie Deppe, sophomore Meredith Hanschu, junior Elisabeth Benoit, senior Addie Bell, junior Carly Schilling and sophomore Courtney Valerious (bow) earned IU's first Big Ten win from a 2V8 squad by downing Minnesota, 7:30.5-7:33.9 in the morning session. The rest of the squads battled with Ohio State, Minnesota and Southern California in each of their head-to-head races.
"Overall, I am psyched about the 2V8 win," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "They did a phenomenal job to beat Minnesota. Our team is starting to gain confidence, and this is a huge step forward for us as a team."
In the rest of the morning session, the first varsity 4 contingent of sophomore Raechelle Medellin (cox), junior Erin Kuehn (stroke), senior Annie Lawson, senior Stephanie Weert and senior Kristin Storer (bow) took a loss to Minnesota, 8:16.6-8:39.2.
Additionally, the first novice 8 unit of freshman Meg Monaghan (cox), freshman Alyse Bruszewski (stroke), junior Megan DeCamilla, sophomore Krista Brown, freshman Ashley McClure, freshman Casey Keating, freshman Teresa Snider, freshman Alison Beasley and freshman Amanda Mitchell (bow) took third behind Minnesota (7:27.2) and Ohio State (7:50.8). IU crossed the finish line in 8:06.2.
IU's varsity 8 squad of sophomore Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Amanda Walker (stroke), junior Lauren Anderson, senior Kelly Schuiling, junior Ashley Airis, junior Laura Lazaridis, sophomore Stacey Young, sophomore Rozzie McHenry and sophomore Dana Powell (bow) closed the morning session by clocking a 7:23.0 against Minnesota's race-winning time of 7:12.6.
In the afternoon, the first varsity 4 finished behind Ohio State, 8:17.8-8:45.1, while the first novice 8 placed third (8:02.0) behind Minnesota (7:37.4) and Ohio State (7:44.2).
The successful second varsity 8 could not keep the ball rolling against the hosting Buckeyes as it lost its outing, 7:12.7-7:29.9.
Meanwhile, IU's first varsity 8 bounced back from its earlier troubles to shave four seconds off its time in a loss to Ohio State, 6:59.6-7:18.6.
"The morning was a bit disappointing for our varsity 8," Peterson said. "They just never got into a rhythm. We started off well, but kept losing an inch or two to Minnesota with every stroke. That adds up to a lot at the end of the race. We came back in the afternoon and hung with Ohio State for the first 1,000 meters. That is outrageous for us to be with the No. 5 team in the nation that long. The wind picked up then, and we just didn't continue the rest of the race that well. It was a learning weekend for us."
Next up, the Indiana rowing squad plays host to the 2005 Big Ten Championships at Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind., on April 30.
