Loukas, Silvestri Advance To One-Meter Finals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 18 Indiana women's swimming and diving advanced two divers into tonight's championship finals as well as secured the top points in the bottom eight slots on March 17 during the initial diving preliminary round of the 2005 NCAA Championships. The one-meter competition featured some great dives as freshman Christina Loukas and junior Lisa Silvestri advanced into this evening's finals in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Loukas put together a 288.65 string of dives, while Silvestri tallied 286.70 for the Hoosiers. Meanwhile, senior Cassandra Cardinell finished ninth with a 279.95 to add nine points to the IU coffer.
Additionally, Zone C went a long way to adding more slots at next years championship as five of the top nine performances came out of Indiana's zone.
"We hung tough this afternoon," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "It was a tough field for us and we qualified two to this evening's finals. Cassie (Cardinell) came close to making it, but just couldn't really hit a dive this afternoon. We start from scratch tonight."
Next up, the Cream and Crimson continues the 2005 NCAA Championships at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind., with finals.
