No. 18 IU Pushes 400 Free Relay to Finals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 18 Indiana women's swimming and diving squad pushed its 400-yard freestyle relay into this evening's finals session of the 2005 NCAA Championships at 7 p.m., at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
"I thought they did a nice job on that relay," Indiana head coach Dorsey Tierney said. "It was a little bit slower than our conference time, but I am glad they got into finals tonight."
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, IU's quartet of sophomore Annica Lofstedt, junior Doherty Colgin, sophomore Leila Vaziri and senior Erin Smith advanced to the consolation finals with the 12th-fastest qualifying time of 3:22.14. Meanwhile, Georgia's squad of senior Andrea Georoff, senior Paige Kearns, senior Samantha Arsenault and freshman Amanda Weir earned the top spot with a pool-record 3:17.06.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Vaziri finished 37th with a 2:00.57. Meanwhile, senior Kirsty Coventry of Auburn set a pool record with a time of 1:53.54 as the top qualifier.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson continue the 2005 NCAA Championships at 1 p.m., on Saturday, March 19 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind., with preliminary performances on the tower.
