BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - From time to time, junior Elaine Deppe will provide a diary of the off-season experience of an Indiana rower as well as her thoughts on what it is like to be a student at Indiana University.
The first week of classes are now officially over. I've found that I'm starting to get the swing of things after attending IU for a few years. My classes are a lot more applied to my major and are about things that I would really like to focus on. My advisors have been a huge help in helping me to schedule my classes around practice and working. The great thing about being a student-athlete is that the athletics department makes sure you are taking the classes you need to take and you get them done in time.
Not only are the first week of classes over, the first week of working out is over. It's been hectic trying to overcome the remnants of the hurricane, but everyone's really excited to get back into the boats. I was really excited to see the team come back and jump right back into working out like we never even ended the last spring season.
As for the novices, this is probably the biggest turn out we've had for incoming novices to come check out rowing. I said before that this is one of the best groups of natural athletes I've seen, but they amaze me more everyday. They already show dedication that only athletes show after doing that sport for several years. I'm already excited to see what next week is going to bring for our fresh and enthusiastic team!
