BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team improved its record to 3-0 with a 5-2 victory over Kansas on Jan. 22 at the Indiana Tennis Center. For the third consecutive match, the Hoosiers were unbeatable in doubles.
"I was pleased with the match today especially the doubles," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "I knew the doubles point was an important one. They switched their doubles lineup around since the fall and had their No. 1 girl in the No. 3 position, so I expected some trouble there. We won at No. 3 doubles, and that is what I was most pleased with. We knew this would be a tough singles day for us since Kansas is so strong in the top two spots. I was happy that our other four singles played so well. We are a deep team and will win a lot of matches in the No. 3-6 positions."
The IU doubles teams remained perfect in 2006. At No. 1 doubles, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan convincingly defeated Christine Skoda and Elizaveta Avdeeva, 8-1. Freshman Sigrid Fischer and sophomore Brianna Williams won at the No. 2 slot with an 8-2 win over Lauren Hommell and Edina Horvath to secure the doubles point for Indiana. In the tightest doubles match of the day, freshman Alba Berdala and junior Cecile Perton beat Brittany Brown and Ksenia Bukina, 8-5, in the No. 3 position for the sweep.
In singles, Berdala came off the court first. The Geron, Spain product topped Hommell, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 position. In No. 3 singles, Williams improved her record to a perfect 3-0 by beating Skoda in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 5 singles, Fischer beat Horvath easily by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Perton improved her singles record to 2-1 by topping Brown, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot. Despite battling back in the second set, McGaffigan dropped a hard-fought match to Avdeeva at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
In the day's most exciting match, Batty, at No. 1 singles, battled back after losing the first set, 6-4, to No. 79 ranked Bukina to win the second one, 4-6. In the tiebreaker, Batty fought hard but dropped the final set, 10-4.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 29 against No. 14 Duke at 10 a.m., followed by instate foe Ball State at 3 p.m. at the Tennis Center.
