Hoosiers Head to Madison to Battle Badgers

HOOSIER HEADLINES
• Indiana (11-9, 5-4) travels to Madison, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Badgers (8-13, 2-7) on Thursday, Feb. 2 the Kohl Center. This is the only regular season meeting between the two teams this year. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (EST) and can be heard locally on WHCC-FM 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action. Indianapolis based WXLW-AM 950 will also pick up the game and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Net North with Craig Coshun and Shawna Nicols on the call.
• This will be the 52nd meeting between the Hoosiers and Badgers, with Indiana holding a 37-14 advantage in the all-time series. Indiana won the only meeting last season, 71-66, in Bloomington on Feb. 3, 2005.
• The Hoosiers are looking for their sixth conference win of the 2005-06 season and 12th overall. Last season, IU was 10-18 overall and 3-13 in the league.
WISCONSIN AT A GLANCE
Wisconsin is 8-13 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten. The Badgers picked up their first conference road win of the year, 75-65, against Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 29 in Ann Arbor.
Sophomore Jolene Anderson, the 2005 Big Ten Freshman of the Year is UW's leading scorer and rebounder at 17.7 ppg (fourth in the conference) and 7.0 rpg (10th in the conference), respectively. Anderson also is first on her team in assists ( 3.8) and steals (2.0). Her classmate Janese Banks is the only other Badger averaging double-figures as she puts up 12.8 ppg. Banks returned to the Wisconsin line up on Jan. 29 for the first time since suffering a foot injury on Jan. 5.
As a team, Wisconsin leads the Big Ten in rebounding offense (41.3) and offensive rebounds (17.38). It also ranks second in rebounding margin (+5.6).
Head coach Lisa Stone is in her third season at Wisconsin with a 30-46 school record. Stone came to Madison with 18 years of coaching experience after serving as the head coach at Drake University (2000-03), UW-Eau Claire (1988-2000) and Cornell College (1985-88). Over the years, Stone has a career collegiate record of 406-164. The Oregon, Wis., native has ties to the Big Ten as she played at Iowa from 1980-84.

An Indiana win would...
• Mark its sixth Big Ten win of the 2005-06 season. The Hoosiers have not won six conference games since the 2001-02 season.
•Be its third conference win on the road this year
•Mark its first win in Madison since the 2002-03 season
DEMUTH ON VERGE OF ANOTHER IU RECORD
With the career free-throws record (466) under her belt already, senior Jenny DeMuth has her eye on another school record, as she is just six steals away from breaking the career steals mark. Currently DeMuth has 205 steals. Former IU standout and current head coach of Youngstown State, Tisha Hill (1989-92) holds the record now with 210 steals. No other Hoosier even ranks among the top five in both categories (free throws and steals.)
DOUBLE-DIGIT BIG TEN WINS
IU defeated back-to-back conference opponents by more then 15 points (Michigan-25, Illinois-15), marking the first time since the 2000-01 season. The last time IU accomplished the feat was on Feb. 25 vs, Northwestern (17 points), and March 1 vs. Minnesota (22 points).
MAY I ASSIST YOU?
In the Hoosiers' game on Thursday, Jan. 26, against Illinois, Indiana handed out a season-high 16 assists in the victory. The previous season-high was 15 against North Florida on Dec. 20, 2005. IU has averaged 12 assists in its last five games, with Cyndi Valentin (16) and Leah Enterline (8) leading the way.
MCKAY RISES TO OCCASION
Junior Sarah McKay provided a huge spark off the bench in IU's victory over Illinois on Jan. 26. The 6-7 center led the Hoosier squad in scoring with her season-high 13 points and six rebounds. McKay had only been averaging 1.1 ppg and 1.1 rpg prior to the game.
RECORDS WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN
Another record was broken on Jan. 9 against then-No. 15/15 Minnesota, when senior Jenny DeMuth connected on all 10 of her free throw attempts to move into first place in the IU record book for career free throws. DeMuth surpassed Denise Jackson's mark of 443 and currently has 466 free throws made in her career. DeMuth's mark also ranks ninth in the Big Ten record books. She needs four more to move into eighth-place.
BETTER IN THE BIG TEN
With its 63-48 defeat over Illinois on Jan. 26, Indiana picked up its fifth conference win of the season, which is two more then IU had last year. The Hoosiers won four Big Ten games in 2003-04 ,five in 2002-03 and eight in 2001-02. It's highest conference win total (15) was during the 1982-83 season. IU's four Big Ten losses this year have all been against ranked teams.
CONFERENCE STATS
Through nine conference games, Indiana has made its mark in the top five of nine categories among Big Ten teams. IU ranks first in rebounding defense (33.1), second in field goal percent defense (.382), third in third in scoring defense (56.2), fourth in steals (9.67), defensive rebounds (24.25) scoring margin (+4.8) and turnover margin (+2.00). Finally the Hoosiers are fifth in rebounding margin (+2.2).
