TAMPA, Fla. - The Indiana rowing team is currently training in Tampa, Fla., for its winter training trip from Dec. 31 to Jan. 7. The Hoosiers will write in to IUHOOSIERS.com from time to time to let everyone know how the team is doing. Junior Rozzie McHenry is the fifth to report in from Tampa.
Day six is yet another beautiful day in Tampa, Fla. We started our morning off with a run from the hotel to the boathouse to get our bodies ready for another great row. With the water smooth as glass and the sun shining, it was the making for great rowing weather! In the morning row, we had a long steady state row out into the Tampa Bay. We got to see some dolphins that were swimming around our boat! The focus for this morning's row was perfection! In order to go fast, we have to be as close to perfection as possible when it comes to blade work and body control. Some of the other things we focused on in this row consisted of matching up with each other, acceleration, using our body weight and our catches and finishes. We made some great improvements that will helps us to achieve our team goals in spring racing!
After a long productive row, it was time for some breakfast! We had breakfast all together as a team and then it was back to bed for some extra sleep before this afternoon's row. At 3 p.m., we all headed back to the boathouse for an afternoon row. We did five-minute race pieces and some drill work. Race pieces always get me fired up. It is an awesome feeling to be in a boat pulling as hard as you can knowing that each stroke is an opportunity to gain speed over an opponent. One quote that I read everyday and remind myself while I am training is, "The only way to beat an opponent is to train harder."
Coach Peterson stresses that as athletes we need to make sure that we are eating right and getting enough sleep, because we need to be healthy and ready to train at a high level in order to get to NCAAs. From Day One of our training trip to Day Six, there have been so many great improvements both mentally and physically within the boat. The boat feel is really starting to come on strong.
We ended the night with a stop at a nearby ice cream shop and then we all headed back to the hotel to watch some film from today's practices. Coach Peterson pointed out a lot of things that we as a team need to work on in order for our boat to go faster. Watching film is a great tool because we can really see how our stroke looks in the boat. This training trip has been so much fun because of all the hard work that everyone is putting in on the water each day. Well, day six has come to an end. Time to get some rest for tomorrow's hard work!
Go Hoosiers!!
