Hoosiers Open 2006-07 Rowing Slate with Scrimmage Against Cincinnati

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's rowing team opened its 2006-07 season with a scrimmage against Cincinnati at Lake Lemon on Oct. 15.
The scrimmage included a head race and five two-minute pieces, with the Hoosiers winning three of the pieces. Indiana's varsity eight of Betsy Hibbard (cox), Dana Powell, Jamie Spoto, Ashley Johnson, Elaine Deppe, Kiri Crane, Kelsey Kapral, Courtney Valerious and Rozzie McHenry picked up the Hoosiers' first win of the day in the second two-minute piece, topping Cincinnati's varsity eight by two seats.
IU's varsity eight also won the fourth piece, putting four seats of open water between itself and UC's varsity eight. The Hoosiers closed the scrimmage with a win in the fifth piece, with the varsity eight clearing the Bearcats's varsity eight by three seats.
The Bearcats won the first event of the day, an approximately 4.5-kilometer head race, with Cincinnati's varsity eight of Liz Johnson (cox), Jessica Beebe, Stephanie Celek, Lindsey Kemna, Emily Knaus, Jodie Lush, Lisa Teague, Elizabeth Tremblay and Sarah White turning in a time of 16:15 for the victory. Indiana's varsity eight finished second, 13 seconds off the Bearcats' pace.
UC's varsity eight also won the first and third pieces of the day.
Indiana got solid performances from its second varsity and novice eights. The second varsity eight of Madison Spruell (cox), Jenn Maslanka, Laura Stebbins, Colleen Ryan, Kourtney Beckham, Laura Fuhrmann, Marla Alexander, Stephanie Horvath and Jessica Keller was just 10 seconds behind the varsity eight in the head race, finishing third overall. The novice eight of Michelle Marchese (cox), Molly Sinks, Katie Feckler, Laura Jones, Brittaney Norris, Andrea Francis, Katie Liston, Stephanie Hamilton and Sarah Tinsley was just four seconds behind the second varsity eight, and finished fourth overall, ahead of Cincinnati's second varsity eight.
The Hoosiers' second varsity eight posted its best finish in the two-minute pieces in the first one, coming in second to UC's first varsity eight. The novice eight finished third in the third piece, and topped the Bearcats' second varsity eight in four of the five pieces.
"Firstly, congratulations to Cincinnati," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "They are much improved over last year. Pam Mork is in her second year as head coach there, and she's got them heading in the right direction. I told our girls after the race that I think we overlooked Cincinnati a little bit, and they exploited it. This is a good wakeup call for us. The reason we do this is so we learn early in the year what we need to work on."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 22, when the varsity crew will compete at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass., and the novice will host Louisville in a scrimmage on Lake Lemon.
