IU Rowing Falls to Louisville in Scrimmage

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's rowing team hosted Louisville in a scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 21, falling to the Cardinals in a head race and two of three two-minute pieces on Lake Lemon.
In the head race, Louisville's second varsity eight of Jessica Smith, Martha Shults, Anna Ardiel, Laura Cers, Kate Rickers, Mallory Hamman, Lisa Grace, Jen Allen and Denise Borders turned in a time of 17:13 for the win.
Indiana's third varsity eight of Madison Spruell (cox), Stephanie Hamilton (stroke), Katie Liston, Laura Fuhrmann, Marla Alexander, Emily Kasavana, Katie Feckler, Stephanie Horvath and Sarah Tinsley (bow) was a close second, finishing just five seconds off the pace in 17:18.
The Hoosiers' second varsity eight of Carlie Boese (cox), Jenn Maslanka (stroke), Kelsey Kapral, Ashley Johnson, Brittaney Norris, Molly Sinks, Kourtney Beckham, Andrea Francis and Jessica Keller (bow) finished third, posting a time of 17:57.
Monica Idstein (cox), Faye Sparks (stroke), Justine Maxey, Colleen Calhoun, Jenny Schepper, Julie Long, Brittney Paulk, Nicole Coton and Shawna Munoz (bow) comprised IU's novice eight, and came in fourth in the head race in a time of 20:12.
Louisville's novice eight (21:03) and second novice eight (22:31) rounded out the field.
Both teams competed without their respective varsity eights, which are both in Boston, Mass., for the Head of the Charles.
Indiana and Louisville also squared off in three two-minute pieces, with the Cardinals claiming victory in two of them. After Rachel Mersch and Mandy Erdman switched into UL's second varsity eight, the Cardinals took the first piece over IU's second varsity eight by about three seats.
The Hoosiers rebounded to claim the second piece, winning by two seats, before Louisville capped the day with a three-seat victory over IU's second varsity eight in the final piece.
"Overall, today's outcome was a win-win situation," Indiana assistant coach Carmen Mirochna said. "While we didn't knock off Louisville, our second boat, stacked with sophomore rowers, represented well. We are a bottom-heavy team looking to push the upper echelon. This is a solid start, but our work here is not yet finished. Every athlete left the boathouse today with a goal. They have one week from Tuesday to take that personal responsibility and apply it to our Head of the Hooch lineups. On the novice side of things, (assistant coach) Fran (O'Rourke) spent the last week focusing on effort being key, and the novice came through, not confusing effort with results."
Indiana's varsity eight will be in action at the Head of the Charles on Sunday, Oct. 22, in the women's championship eights race at 4:26 p.m.
