BOSTON - Indiana's varsity eight finished 28th in the women's championship eights race at the 42nd Head of the Charles regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 22.
The Hoosiers' first varsity eight of Betsy Hibbard (cox), Courtney Valerious (stroke), Rozzie McHenry, Colleen Ryan, Laura Stebbins, Dana Powell, Jamie Spoto, Kiri Crane and Elaine Deppe (bow) turned in a time of 17:08.314 on the three-mile course. The Hoosiers took only their varsity eight to the prestigious regatta.
There were 45 crews in the race, including several collegiate and club teams and the U.S. Rowing National Team, which claimed first place in 15:36.733. Michigan was the only other Big Ten team competing in the event, finishing in 13th with a time of 16:40.420.
Indiana started 43rd, and was able to overtake crews from the University of San Diego and Dowling College. IU was also able to hang with eventual sixth-place finisher Washington for much of the race.
"I think we did a great job," head coach Steve Peterson said. "The goal was to finish in the top 25 and we were 28th, but it was a good step forward. We executed well. We just have to keep performing at practice and the rest of it will take care of itself."
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
