Hoosier Rowers to Compete at Head of the Hooch

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's rowing team will compete at the Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn., taking part in three different races on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Indiana will enter crews in three different three-mile head races, including the women's freshman novice eight, the women's championship eight and the women's championship four.
The freshman novice eight is scheduled to begin at 9:35 a.m. The Hoosiers' first novice eight will consist of Michelle Marchese (cox), Laura Jones (stroke), Sarah Tinsley, Cassady Bethel-Thompson, Katie Liston, Colleen Calhoun, Emily Kasavana, Faye Sparks and Brittney Paulk (bow).
The second novice eight will include Monica Idstein (cox), Christina Sell (stroke), Elizabeth Young, Nicole Coton, Jenny Schepper, Julie Long, Sarah Lintner, Adair Ahlers and Justine Maxey (bow).
The championship eight is slated for a 10:45 a.m. start. IU's first varsity eight will consist of Betsy Hibbard (cox), Courtney Valerious (stroke), Rozzie McHenry, Colleen Ryan, Laura Stebbins, Ashley Johnson, Jamie Spoto, Dana Powell and Kelsey Kapral (bow).
Madison Spruell (cox), Molly Sinks (stroke), Brittaney Norris, Andrea Francis, Jessica Keller, Laura Fuhrmann, Katie Feckler, Stephanie Horvath and Kourtney Beckham (bow) comprise the second varsity eight.
Indiana's final event of the day will be the championship four, which is scheduled for 3:20 p.m. The Hoosiers will field three crews in the race. The first varsity four will include Hibbard (cox), Powell (stroke), McHenry, Valerious and Spoto (bow), while the second varsity four will be composed of Spruell (cox), Johnson (stroke), Stebbins, Ryan and Kapral (bow).
Marchese (cox), Sinks (stroke), Norris, Jones and Feckler (bow) comprise IU's freshman four.
"It should be a good race," head coach Steve Peterson said. "Some of the crews that should be fast that we'll be facing are Tennessee, Duke, UCF, who got real fast last year, North Carolina, Clemson and we'll see Cincinnati again. So it should provide us with another great opportunity to test our speed. This is also going to be the one and only official race of the fall for the novice, so it will be exciting to see how they can stand up against other novice crews."
