WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Senior Leila Vaziri and freshman Amilee Smith both earned spots in the finals of the U.S. Open on Dec. 2, the final day of competition at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Vaziri turned in a time of 58.07 in the 100-meter freestyle in the morning preliminary session to finish 15th and earn a spot in the consolation final. In the evening session, Vaziri touched in 57.65, good for fourth in the B-Final.
Smith finished 24th overall in the morning preliminaries of the 200-meter breaststroke, touching in 2:39.23, the fourth-fastest time in school history. She then turned in a time of 2:41.05 in the evening session to take eighth in the C-Final. Her finals time was the seventh-best in IU lore.
Joining Vaziri in the preliminaries of the 100 free was freshman Presley Bard, who tied for 79th with a time of 59.98.
Sophomore Sarah Stockwell swam in the prelims of the 200 breast, finishing 45th in 2:43.53.
"They all did a good job," IU head coach Ray Looze said. "Amilee and Leila did a good job getting second swims, given where we are in our training. Now we're going to go get ready for finals and take care of business in the classroom."
