STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - While the bulk of the Indiana wrestling team traveled to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, five members of the Hoosier squad competed unattached at the Penn State Open, with a pair of true freshmen posting solid finishes at the event.
Bloomington native Kurt Kinser continued his impressive redshirt campaign with a third-place finish at Penn State. Kinser won his first four matches, two by fall and two by major decision, to advance to the semifinals. His fourth victory was a 13-2 major decision over top seed and seventh-ranked John Cox of Navy. In the semis, Kinser was topped in a 7-5 sudden victory by VMI's Sam Alvarenga, but the redshirt rebounded in the third-place match, pinning Duke's Voris Tejada in 1:43.
Kinser's classmate Alex Warren also had a solid effort at PSU, winning his first two matches at 141 pounds, one by pin and one by technical fall, before running into UNC's Nick Stabile, who took a 1-0 decision over Warren. In the wrestleback, Warren was topped by Navy's Joe Breen, 8-6.
Three others - sophomores Wesley Fike and Scott Kelly and freshman Bryan Beard - participated in the Open but were eliminated in the first round.
