EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 17 Indiana wrestling team suffered another close loss to a Big Ten opponent as No. 13 Northwestern defeated IU, 19-15. Despite jumping out to a 12-3 lead, the Wildcats took four of the final five bouts to post the come-from-behind victory.
The loss drops IU to 11-5 overall and 2-5 Big Tens, while the Wildcats move to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference action.
Senior defending national champion Joe Dubuque remained undefeated with his third win over a ranked opponent in No. 7 John Velez. Dubuque started slow, but allowed only one escape from the 125-pound wildcat to take the match 6-1. The Bloomfield, N.J., native now stands at 19-0 overall and 7-0 in Big Ten action.
Indiana's 1-2 punch continued to excel in conference action, as 133-pounder Andrae Hernandez followed IU's victory at 125 with a 10-3 decision over Daniel Quintela. Redshirt freshman Hernandez looked impressive holding a 9-0 lead heading into the final period and he just missed bonus points as Quintela grabbed a late takedown and escape. The Griffith, Ind., native stands at 25-6 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten affairs.
The Wildcats got on the board with a decision win at 141 pounds before junior Matt Cooper notched his first conference victory of the season, disposing of NU's Marty Gould, 5-3, in overtime at 149 pounds.
All-American Brandon Becker (157) followed the impressive 9-3 IU start against the No. 13 Wildcats with a 5-0 decision over Greg Hagel. Indiana just missed increasing its lead and posting an upset as sophomore Max Dean faced No. 19 Will Durkee. Durkee scored a second-period escape to edge Dean, 1-0.
Indiana, still leading 12-6, dropped three of its final four bouts to give Northwestern its first lead after the 184-pound bout. With its strongest part of their lineup coming in the mid-weight classes, No. 2 Jake Herbert brought NU back into the dual and tied the match at 12-12, pinning sophomore Marc Bennett at 174 pounds. NU then grabbed a major decision win at 197 pounds to seal the victory.
IU finished strong as sophomore heavyweight Dave Herman posted his first win against a top-20 opponent, putting together a solid three-period match to down No. 9 Dustin Fox, 5-3. Herman took the lead 3-0 after an escape and takedown in the second period. Fox tied the contest in the third, but after an escape and point from riding time, Herman moved to 24-11 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten duals.
Indiana wraps up Big Ten conference duals, facing No. 3 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Feb 19, at 2 p.m. (EST).
