BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 17 Indiana wrestling team earned six pre-seeds for the 2006 Big Ten Wrestling Championships as announced by the conference office on Feb. 27. Senior 125-pounder Joe Dubuque and fourth-seeded Brady Richardson at 197 pounds lead the Hoosiers in the pre-seed rankings, both of them looking for their first Big Ten titles.
Dubuque is making his third straight appearance at the championships, finishing fourth in 2004 and third in 2005. Richardson is making his third appearance at Big Tens, his first at 197 pounds after competing at 174 pounds in 2004 and 2005, finishing fifth and second, respectively.
Sophomore 157-pounder Brandon Becker earned a fifth-seed nod at 157 pounds and will be participating in his second straight championships after finishing in fifth a year ago. First-year starter and Big Ten participant Andrae Hernandez clinched the sixth seed in the pre-seed rankings, going 6-1 in conference action. Sophomores Max Dean (165) and Dave Herman (heavyweight) round out the Hoosiers in the top-8 seeds, both grabbing an eighth seed in the rankings.
The pre-seeds are determined by a vote amongst the league's head wrestling coaches after consideration of regular-season results. The 2006 Big Ten Wrestling Championships will take place on Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5, at Assembly Hall on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The official Big Ten Championships bracket will be set on Friday, March 3.
