OKLAHOMA CITY - The No. 18 Indiana wrestling team opens the first round of the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 16, at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. IU's five qualifiers begin their journey to All-American status as the first round begins at 11 a.m. For all your tournament updates and recaps, log onto IUHOOSIERS.com for full session recaps, while the NCAA will be running live updates at NCAAsports.com throughout each session.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
All sessions will take place at the Ford Center.
March 16
Session I [Pigtails and First Round/8 Mats]: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Session II [Preliminaries, Wrestle-back preliminaries/8 Mats]: 6:30-11 p.m.
March 17
Session III [Quarterfinals and Wrestle-Backs/8 Mats]: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Session IV [Semifinals and Wrestle-backs/6 Mats]: 6-11 p.m.
March 18
Session V [Wrestle-backs and 3rd-8th Medal Rounds/6 Mats]: 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Session VI [Finals and Awards Ceremony/1 Mat]: 6:30-9 p.m.
TOURNAMENT HOST
The Oklahoma City All Sports Association and the University of Oklahoma will co-host the 76th annual NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the For Center in Oklahoma City.
TEAM RACE
Oklahoma State University won its 33rd overall and third consecutive NCAA championship in 2005. Prior to 2003, the University of Minnesota had won two consecutive team championships, while the University of Iowa had won six consecutive and nine out the last 10. The last team other than Iowa, Oklahoma State and Minnesota to win the national championship was Arizona State in 1988. It was the only year since 1967 when a team not from the state of Oklahoma or Iowa has won a championship. Michigan State was crowned champions in 1967.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
ESPNU will air the quarterfinal live at 10 a.m. Central time on Friday, March 17. Additionally, ESPNU will be producing and syndicating live coverage of the semifinals beginning at 6 p.m. Central time on the same day. Check your local listings for stations airing the event. ESPN will air the championships live at 6:30 p.m. Central time on Saturday, March 18.
