Hoosiers Remain Perfect on Spring Break Trip

TAMPA, Fla. - The Indiana men's tennis team continued its winning ways in Florida with its fourth straight victory, downing Army, 6-1 on March 16. The Hoosiers won all three doubles positions before claiming five of the six singles contests in straight sets to claim the victory. IU improved to 9-6 on the year, while Army fell to 5-10.
"We were a better team than Army," Indiana head coach Ken Hydinger said. "We have played a lot of tennis recently. I felt like the guys did a good job of concentrating. The guys were very workman like in the way they went about the match. Overall, we did a good job up and down the lineup."
Senior Neil Kenner and sophomore Michael McCarthy picked up their second win in as many days at the No. 3 slot. The Hoosier tandem evened its mark at 2-2 with an 8-1 win over Army's Sean Harris and David Collins. Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov and sophomore Dara McLoughlin notched their seventh victory of the season at the No. 1 doubles position with an 8-3 win over Carl Fisher and Kevin Harris. Freshman Peter Antons and junior David Bubenicek made it a clean sweep of the doubles point with a win, 8-4, over Michael Good and Eddie Kang at the No. 2 spot. It marked the ninth win of the year for the Hoosier duo.
McCarthy recorded his team-leading 16th win on the season. Leading 5-0 in the opening set, Army's Good retired to give McCarthy his third straight victory. The Cincinnati, Ohio native topped his win total from a season ago when he had 15 as a freshman.
McLoughlin and Roussel extended their season-high winning streaks with wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively. McLoughlin improved to 15-11 on the year with his sixth straight win, 6-4, 6-1, over Kang. Roussel won his fourth consecutive contest of the spring trip. The junior transfer downed Sean Harris, 6-4, 6-1, to up his season mark to 6-5.
Bubenicek and Kenner rounded out the Hoosier victories with wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 slots. Bubenicek improved to 15-7 on the year with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Phil Muhawi. Kenner garnered his 10th win of the year as he defeated Kevin Harris, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hoosiers conclude their spring break slate with a March 18 affair at Central Florida. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 1979 season. Indiana defeated the Golden Knights, 9-0, during that season.
