Dubuque Advances; Four Hoosiers Remain in 2006 NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY - The No. 18 Indiana wrestling team went 2-3 in the second session of the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 16, at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. Defending national champion Joe Dubuque improved to 2-0 at 125 pounds to lead the Hoosier effort on the day.
Dubuque continued his road to the title with a second-round victory, and remains the only Hoosier left in the championship bracket.
Sophomore All-American Brandon Becker (157) dropped into the consolation bracket after losing a nailbiter to No. 11-seed Derek Zinck of Lehigh. Sophomore Dave Herman also fell to the bottom bracket after falling to Michigan's No. 3-seed Greg Wagner.
Sophomore Max Dean moved into the next round of the wrestle-back bracket after tallying his first victory of the 2006 edition of the championships. Redshirt freshman Andrae Hernandez rounded out the Hoosier NCAA qualifier contingent, concluding his season after falling in his first bout of wrestle-backs.
SESSION II RECAP
At 125 pounds, Dubuque posted another strategic win with his 4-0 decision victory over David Tomasette of Hofstra. Dubuque shot for an early-match takedown to take a 2-0 lead into the third period. The Bloomfield, N.J., native rode Tomasette for the most of the third and picked up a pair of penalty points to advance to the third round. Dubuque will face No. 11-seed Luke Smith of Central Michigan for their first time this season in the quarterfinals.
At 133, Hernandez's season came to an end with a 16-9 decision loss to Joseph Baker of Navy. Hernandez found himself in a quick 10-4 hole after the first period. The redshirt freshman, however, never gave up and made Baker earn every point. Two takedowns by Hernandez in the final period trimmed the lead, but fell short as Baker took the 16-9 decision. Hernandez concluded his debut trip at the NCAA championships with a 0-2 record and an overall record of 27-10 on the year.
Becker's match at 157 proved to be a battle until the end. Zinck came out firing in the first period and notched a quick takedown to take a 2-0 lead. The Mickleton, N.J., native countered with an escape. Becker, however, fell victim to another quick shot to his right leg to give Zinck a 4-1 lead with his second takedown. The sophomore went on to tie the match and opted for the top position in the second period. The All-American from a season ago dominated the period, riding Zinck for all of the second and picked up a 2:09 riding-time advantage. The feat proved necessary in the third, as Becker suffered another takedown to give Zinck the slim lead, 6-5. His riding time advantage evened the match to send it into sudden victory. In the overtime period, Becker suffered a fourth takedown to give Zinck the 8-6 victory. Becker faces Dan Clum (Wyoming) in the next round.
At 165, Dean advanced after a match of will, downing Ray Blake of Stanford by a 7-5 decision. The 2005 NCAA qualifier fell behind early after Blake notched a first-period takedown. A Dean escape took the match into the second period with Blake up, 2-1. The West Chester, Ohio, native started the second period on top, suffering another setback as Blake registered a reversal to take a 4-1 lead. The sophomore, however, fought back and rode Blake the entire third period and scored the match's final six points to earn the 6-4 victory with riding time. Dean advanced to the third session where he will face Troy Letters (Lehigh).
In the heavyweight division, Herman grappled tough through the first minute of action, but Wagner quickly brought him down for his first takedown of the period. Down 2-0, Herman found himself in trouble with Wagner on top and the Fort Wayne, Ind., native fending off a fall. Herman, unable to break the hold, fell by a pin at the 2:19 mark to the 2006 Big Ten runner up. Herman faces Payam Zarrinpour (Northwestern) in the next round.
The Hoosiers continue action at the 2006 NCAA Championships with the third session on Thursday, March 17, at 10 a.m.
