CLEMSON, S.C. - The 1N8 crew of freshman Madison Spruell (cox), freshman Jenn Maslanka (stroke), junior Kourtney Beckham, sophomore Megan Robb, freshman Jamie Spoto, sophomore Kiri Crane, sophomore Jessica Newlin, freshman Brittany Billingsley and freshman Jessica Keller (bow) picked up Indiana rowing's initial win of the season with a first-place time of 7:06.1 in Clemson, S.C., on March 18.
Overall, the 1N8 shell knocked off Clemson (7:10.7), Marist (7:51.0) and a pair of Purdue boats that took fifth and sixth with an 8:02.4 and 8:03.5, respectively. Additionally, the 2N8 of freshman Carlie Boese (cox), freshman Stephanie Hamilton (stroke), freshman Kelsey Kapral, freshman Stephanie Horvath, sophomore Marla Alexander, freshman Rachel Bernhardt, freshman Allison Parman, freshman Christina Vernon and freshman Ariana Breckner (bow) placed third in the event for the Hoosiers.
In other action, the 1V8 contingent of junior Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Ashley Airis (stroke), senior Laura Lazaridis, freshman Courtney Valerious, senior Elisabeth Benoit, freshman Ashley Johnson, junior Rozzie McHenry, junior Colleen Ryan and junior Elaine Deppe (bow) finished second with a 6:49.0 against Clemson's first-place clocking of 6:46.9. Notably, the Hoosiers surpassed Penn (6:52.8), Marist (6:58.4) and Purdue (7:05.5) in the varsity 8+ race.
In other action, IU's 1V4 squad of Hibbard (cox), junior Dana Powell (stroke), senior Liz Marshall, senior Erin Kuehn and junior Laura Stebbins (bow) finished second with a 7:54.8 against Penn's 1V4 time of 7:48.4. Meanwhile, the Indiana group of freshman Shelby Jacobson (cox), freshman Ketra Bartek (stroke), sophomore Nadia Haven, freshman Melissa Miller and freshman Allison Blackburn (bow) finished fifth with an 8:49.3 in the event, while Penn's 2V4 took third (8:05.9) and Clemson claimed fourth in 8:24.3.
"Our varsity had a good race today," assistant coach Carmen Mirochna said. "I thought it was a great first race for all of the Hoosiers. Clemson came ready to race, and we gave them our best for now."
Next up, Indiana returns to action on March 25 in East Lansing, Mich., with a Big Ten battle against Michigan State.
