Hoosiers Conclude First Day of 2006 Big Ten Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 17 Indiana wrestling team concluded first-day competition in 11th place with 30.5 points at the 2006 Big Ten Championships at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind., on March 4.
In the 125-pound division, defending national champion Joe Dubuque took his first loss of the season as No. 4-seed Kyle Ott of Illinois picked up the 5-4 win in extra time action. Dubuque's record fell to 21-1 this season. He will face Collin Cudd of Wisconsin for the second time in the final session.
In the 133-pound grouping, redshirt freshman Andrae Hernandez dropped a 12-5 decision to No. 7-seed Gabe Flores of Illinois to fall to 26-8 overall. He will face No. 8-seed Reece Humphrey of Ohio State for seventh place in the third session.
In the 141-pound division, senior Nick Spatola slipped to 8-16 on the year with a 12-4 major decision loss to No. 7-seed Manuel Rivera of Minnesota.
In the 149-pound grouping, junior Matt Cooper fell to 12-11 on the season after a 10-4 loss to No. 7-seed James Woddall of Penn State.
The Hoosiers broke into the win column in the second session when sophomore Brandon Becker improved his record to 20-7 after a 17-2 technical fall win over Tony Greathouse of Michigan State at the 7:00 mark. He then picked up a 7-1 win over No. 8-seed Nathan Galloway of Penn State to advance to 21-7 on the year. He will meet No. 2-seed Craig Henning of Wisconsin in the final session.
Sophomore Max Dean continued IU's second session resurgence with a 4-3 conquest of Nathaniel Augustson of Ohio State to improve to 22-13 on the season. He then pushed his record to 23-13 with a 5-3 victory over No. 6-seed Jake Donar of Wisconsin. Dean will battle No. 2-seed Mike Poeta of Illinois in the third session.
In the 174-pound division, sophomore Marc Bennett took a 12-8 loss to No. 3-seed R.J. Boudro of Michigan State to fall to 12-16 on the year.
In the 184-pound grouping, sophomore Justin Curran suffered a 7-5 loss to No. 6-seed Mike Tamillow of Northwestern to drop to 20-14 this season.
In the 197-pound division, senior Brady Richardson lost to No. 6-seed Dan Erekson of Iowa by pin at the 4:09 mark to fall to 24-8 on the year.
In the heavyweight division, sophomore Dave Herman took a 4-2 loss to No. 3-seed Dustin Fox of Northwestern to fall to 25-14 on the season. He will meet Max Lossen of Michigan State for seventh place during the third session.
The final session of the 2006 Big Ten Championships will take place at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind., on March 5 at noon.
