CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Indiana split its first two games at the Frost Cutlery Classic on March 3 at Frost Stadium. The Hoosiers dropped a 2-1 decision to Tennessee Tech in the opener, before bouncing back to defeat Tennessee-Martin, 5-2, in the second game. The Hoosiers are now 3-5-1 on the season, and they face host Chattanooga at 12:15 p.m. and North Florida at 2:30 p.m. on March 4.
Stephanie Fischer's two-out home run gave Tennessee Tech a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Tennessee Tech added another run in the fourth inning as Katie Spieser drew a bases loaded walk.
Indiana came back to post one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Right fielder Lauren Hines hit a one-out double to left center, and Rachel Carlson was inserted as a pinch runner. Rachel Terry answered with an RBI single to center to score Carlson.
The Hoosiers escaped Tennessee Tech's bases loaded jam in the fifth, as Megan Roark walked Fischer to open the inning. Mariangee Bogado replaced Roark in the circle, and Bogado walked Krystina Dobbs before hitting Danielle Wallace with a pitch. Bogado then struck out Ashley Potts and Sarah Street, and when Fischer attempted to score on Street's dropped third strike, IU catcher Janetta Deaven tagged the plate for the third out.
Roark took the loss in the circle to drop to 1-4 on the season. She allowed four hits and both Golden Eagle runs, one of which was unearned. Bogado did not allow a hit in the final innings, striking out five.
In the second game, Indiana scored four runs in the last three innings for the victory. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on designated hitter Anna Olson's solo home run to center field. IU added two more insurance runs in the fourth, as Olson opened with a double and Kari Bettenbrock followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Tennessee-Martin's Ashley Myatt. Janetta Deaven grounded out to short, but Olson scored on an error by catcher Savannah Roberts. Shortstop Jenilee Huddleston's RBI single then scored Bettenbrock.
The Hoosiers' offense continued in the fifth, as Hines opened with a single and Carlson was again inserted as a pinch runner. Terry followed with a single to left center, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Olson then struck out, but Bettenbrock had an RBI single to center.
Indiana scored one more run in the sixth, which was sandwiched by Tennessee-Martin's adding one run each in the sixth and seventh innings. Bogado had a two-out single to left and promptly stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Bogado crossed the plate when Hines struck out but reached first on a wild pitch third strike.
Bogado went the distance against Tennessee-Martin, allowing three hits while striking out 11 to improve to 2-1 on the year.
