No. 19 Indiana Rolls to Three CWPA Western Division Wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The No. 19 Indiana women's water polo team improved to 4-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division action and 9-7 overall with three victories on March 4. The Hoosiers picked up victories over Grove City (10-3), Slippery Rock (11-3) and Washington & Jefferson (12-2).
"We are growing as a team and are receiving consistent performances from a number of different players," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We expect a lot of our players, and I feel like the way they responding to the challenge. The ladies played impressive team defense on Saturday and only allowed a total of eight goals in three games."
In the opener against the Wolverines of Grove City, the Hoosiers received goals from 10 different players on their way to victory. Senior Janis Pardy had a solid game in the field with four assists and four steals against GCC. It marked the third time this season that the Calgary, Alberta, Canada native notched four helpers in a single game.
Pardy and junior Brooke Zimmerman notched hat tricks in IU's 11-3 win over Slippery Rock. The three-goal performance was the fourth of the season and sixth of Pardy's Hoosier career. In her first season donning the cream and crimson, Zimmerman recorded her fourth hat trick. Along her goal-scoring performance, Zimmerman turned in a three-assist and two-steal showing in the field.
Junior Melissa Soria and freshman Martha Schuessler each notched two goals in the victory over Slippery Rock. In one half of action against SRU, freshman goalkeeper Sarah Larson recorded a career-high seven saves.
"Sarah Larson played well for us on Saturday with 16 saves in three halves of play," King said. "I am happy to see the way she is developing for us in goal."
Indiana capped the day with a 12-2 win over Washington & Jefferson. After scoring two goals in four different games this season, Soria recorded her first hat trick as a Hoosier against the Presidents.
Pardy, Zimmerman and junior Kristin Zernicke each notch a pair of tallies in the win. Pardy also turned in another solid game in the field with three assists and four steals. The Hoosiers also received solo markers from freshmen Jessica Canfield and Maggie Hannon.
Indiana will wrap up the weekend with a pair of CWPA Western Division matches on Sunday, March 5. The Hoosiers will travel to Erie, Pa., to battle Mercyhurst at 9:30 a.m. and Penn State-Behrend at 12:30 p.m.
