Max Dean Selected NWCA Scholar Athlete

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore 165-pounder Max Dean earned his second The National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar Athlete award announced the NWCA on May 3. The IU grappler is one of 68 wrestlers named to the annual list, a group that represents 39 different Division I wrestling programs.
Eighteen of the 68 wrestlers named to the NWCA All-Academic team placed at the 2006 NCAA Division I championships in Oklahoma City.
"For a student-athlete to be both great on the mat and great in the classroom is remarkable," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said.
In all, 18 All-Americans were recognized along with 39 additional NCAA qualifiers. To qualify for selection, wrestlers must have a 3.2 GPA and have been an NCAA qualifier, won 60 percent of his total schedule and must have competed in 60 percent of the team's schedule or have a 3.0 and earned NCAA All-American honors.
Dean and 12 other wrestlers carried GPAs over a 3.8, with just two grapplers in Division I competition boasting a 4.0 GPA. This is Dean's second selection for the academic honor and the Hoosiers' 10th since 2001.
