Olympian Cardinell Makes 10m Finals at 2006 Canada Cup

VICTORIA, B.C. - Former IU standout and Athens Olympian Cassandra Cardinell opened the first day of competition at the 2006 Canada Cup in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on a strong note by qualifying third for finals on May 5.
The Hoosier began the day by posting the fourth-highest set of dives in prelims with a 311.40 tally, to finish just behind the Chinese duo of Tong Jia (1st/352.75) and Ruo Lin Chen (3rd/323.55) as well as Canadian Emilie Heymans (2nd/324.40). Cardinell's run included a 67.20 total in the third round from an inward 3.5 somersault.
In semifinal action, Cardinell captured third in the first set of semis with a 313.25 string of dives to advance to finals. She drilled her final dive to secure a finals berth with a 73.10 tally from a backward 2.5 somersault with 1.5 twists.
Cardinell returns to competition at 8:20 p.m. (PDT). Meanwhile, two-time Big Ten Diver of the Year and of the Championships Christina Loukas will begin her run at Canada Cup hardware in the three-meter competition on May 6 at 9:30 a.m.
