Vaziri Claims 100m Backstroke Title at SPEEDO South Sectional

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Indiana rising senior Leila Vaziri turned in one of the world's top times in the women's 100m long course backstroke at the Southern Zone-South Sectional of the 2006 SPEEDO Champions Series, July 12-16 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Coral Springs, Fla., native, who is competing for the Coral Springs Swim Club, also picked up two top-10 finishes in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the meet.
"This is another step forward for Leila," Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze. "Her goal is to make a national team this summer, and she is well on her way. So far this summer, she is unbeaten in the 100m back. Leila is performing really well right now."
After taking second in the prelims of the 100m back with a time of 1:03.95, Vaziri snapped the 10-year old Southern Zone-South Sectional record with a first-place time of 1:02.19. More impressively, Vaziri's time moved her among the top 25 in the world in the event.
Vaziri also competed in the 50m LC free, taking seventh-place in the finals with a time of 26.91. In the 100m free, Vaziri claimed fourth, touching the wall in 57.66.
Indiana will host the Central Zone portion of the SPEEDO Champions series at the Councilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, July 25-29.
