Kay Reaches Bonus Final 400m IM at Nationals

IRVINE, Calif. - Rising Indiana sophomore Allison Kay reached the bonus finals of the 400-meter individual medley at the 2006 ConocoPhillips National Championships/World Championship Trials at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center on Aug. 3, placing 19th overall.
Kay qualified for the bonus final with a 21st-place showing in the preliminaries in an Olympic Trial cut time of 4:53.61. Kay improved that mark by nearly two seconds in the final, posting a 4:51.82 to move up two places.
Classmate Kristin Cihoski also swam in the prelims of the 400m IM, taking 81st in 5:07.37.
Fellow rising sophomore Sarah Stockwell participated in the 100m breast preliminaries, finishing 48th with a time of 1:13.91.
Incoming freshman Brittany Epperson was 70th in the 50m prelims, touching in 27.04. Rising senior Leila Vaziri, who won the national championship in the 100m back on Aug. 2, finished 97th in the 50m prelims with a time of 27.49.
Incoming freshman Brittany Barwegen, swimming for City of Plano (Texas) Swimming, swam the third leg of the 800m free relay, helping her squad to a 23rd-place finish.
The National Championships resume on Aug. 4, with the 200m fly, 200m back and the 800m freestyle being contested. Preliminaries start at 9 a.m. Pacific time, with finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
