Hoosier Women Wrap Up Competition at National Championships

IRVINE, Calif. - Indiana University swimmers competed in three events at the 2006 ConocoPhillips National Championships/World Championship Trials at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center on Aug. 5, finishing competition at the five-day meet.

In the first event of the morning preliminary session, rising sophomore Sarah Stockwell finished 46th in the 200-meter breast with a time of 2:38.16.

Rising senior Leila Vaziri was 36th in the prelims of the 100m free, touching in 57.26, while incoming freshman Brittany Epperson was 95th with a time of 1:00.81.

In the finals of the 400 medley relay, Indiana's squad of incoming freshman Alyssa Rosinko, rising sophomores Kristy Winck and Allison Kay and rising senior Clarissa Wentworth combined to turn in a time of 4:25.97, good for 31st place. Incoming freshman Brittany Barwegen, swimming for City of Plano (Texas) Swimming, swam the breaststroke leg of the relay, helping her squad to a 36th-place finish.

Vaziri's national title in the 100m back on Aug. 2 was the high point of the Indiana contingent's five-day stay at the National Championships. Vaziri will now represent the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, starting Aug. 17.

"We've had a bit of a mixed bag out here, with Leila being the highlight making the national team," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "Allison Kay had a great performance in the 400 IM. This has been the best summer nationals since I've been here, so that's encouraging."
