Wrestling Announces 2006-07 Schedule

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Trips to Columbia, Mo., and Primm, Nev., highlight the 2006-07 Indiana wrestling schedule, announced on Wednesday, Aug. 9, by Hoosier head coach Duane Goldman. Indiana will host six events throughout the season, including four Big Ten contests and the Hoosier Duals, which are slated for Nov. 25.
"I'm pleased with this year's schedule," Goldman said. "With the number of young athletes on this team, it gives us a number of opportunities to gain experience in order to mature and prepare for the Big Ten and the NCAA Tournament."
The Hoosiers will begin their campaign in East Lansing, Mich., the first of three IU trips to Michigan State on the season, for the Michigan State Open on Nov. 12. The following week, IU heads to Columbia for the Missouri Open, followed by the Hoosier Duals on Nov. 25. At the beginning of December, Indiana will travel to Primm for the two-day Las Vegas Invitational.
"One of our goals is to develop a quick learning curve for our young athletes," Goldman said, "which is why we need to start with the Las Vegas Invitational and the Hoosier Duals early on. We need to be ready as early as possible to compete at a high level."
Also in December, IU will compete in the FITE Duals for the second consecutive season, and the Midlands Championships, in Evanston, Ill., for the third year in a row. In 2007, the Hoosiers have non-conference matchups at Eastern Illinois and against North Carolina State.
In Big Ten action, Indiana plays host to Purdue, Minnesota, Michigan and Northwestern, while it will face Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin on the road. All this leads up to the 2007 Big Ten Championships, held in East Lansing on March 3-4 and the NCAA Tournament from March 15-17 in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Last season, the Hoosiers finished 10th at the Big Ten championships, and had five wrestlers participate in the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers return four of the five wrestlers who competed in the Tournament - current juniors Brandon Becker (157 pounds), Max Dean (165) and Dave Herman (heavyweight) and sophomore Andrae Hernandez (133). Graduated senior Joe Dubuque wrapped up his Hoosier career by taking home his second consecutive national championship in the 125-pound division.
