VERONA, Wis. - With a lineup featuring three freshmen, one sophomore and a junior, the Indiana University women's golf team captured the team title at the Badger Invitational. The Hoosiers, in winning their first title since the 2002 Wolverine Invitational, carded a total of 922 (313-307-302) while battling through inclement conditions over the 54-hole tournament.
"Obviously, I'm very excited for the girls and the way they played," head coach Clint Wallman said. "It was a quality field, and to go out and win the very first tournament that they competed in on the season, it was a big accomplishment for them and for the program. I could not be prouder of this group. For us to sleep on the lead and then go out and put away the tournament shows a lot of heart and a lot of talent."
Individually, junior Elaine Harris carried the success that she saw in her sophomore season into this year as the San Francisco, Calif., native turned in the best finish of her career with a third place finish. Her 10-over par total of 226 (74-77-75) was just one stroke out of a share of medalist honors, which was shared by Katie Elliott of Wisconsin (74-77-74) and Adrienne White of Louisville (71-76-78) at 225.
"Elaine played fabulously today," Wallman said. "Her round today was so solid. She got in position to win, and just barely missed. She definitely led by example in this tournament."
Joining Harris in the top-10 were two of the IU newcomers. Freshman Kellye Belcher tied for sixth in her first collegiate tournament, turning in rounds of 77-76-76 for a total of 229. She was followed by classmate Laura Nochta, who shared 10th place with a total of 233 (80-76-77). Narrowly missing out on a top-10 finish was another newcomer, as freshman Anita Gahir tied for 12th one stroke behind Nochta at 234 (82-78-74) for the 54-hole tournament. Gahir's 74 tied the Hoosiers' low round of the tournament, with Harris also carding the score in the first round on Sunday.
"The freshmen played great," Wallman said. "To come in and have top-15's is remarkable. Their play gave the team a huge boost and allowed us the opportunity to win."
Rounding out the Hoosier lineup was sophomore Amber Lindgren. The Kokomo, Ind., native finished in a tie for 61st position with a tournament total of 258 (89-88-81).
Host Wisconsin finished in second place at the tournament with a total of 932 (311-316-305). Two strokes back, Nebraska (321-318-295) and Oklahoma (306-316-312) shared third position with a 54-hole score of 934.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Lady Northern Tournament. The 54-hole event will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 17.
