BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana hosts its third meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 20, beginning at noon. Scheduled to attend is Purdue, Indiana State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, Alabama and Wright State. The Hoosiers have six meets remaining after this weekend.
THE FUTURE IS NOW
A number of freshmen are leading the Hoosiers in their events. In the pole vault, Vera Neuenswander cleared 3.65 meters at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13. The height was tied for third all-time at Indiana.
In the weight throw, Kristen Ness has a team-best distance of 16.04 meters, done at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. Faith Sherrill has also been strong in the shot put and weight throw events.
Jackie Coleman's season-high in the long jump is 11.43 meters. Ashley Rhodes cleared 1.73 meters in the high jump at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13.
Kayla Smith leads all Hoosiers in the 400 meter run with a time of 59.63 in the event at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13.
SANTA CLAUSING
Senior Stacey Clausing started the year off right at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6, finishing strong in three events. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.02, and led the 4x400 meter relay team to a first-place finish in 3:54.93. Clausing came in third in the 60-meter dash, leading all Hoosiers with a time of 7.65.
Her time of 24.02 in the 200 meters ranks third in the record books at Indiana.
THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Senior Lorian Price was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 9 after winning the 60-meter hurdles (8.67) and long jump (5.67 meters), and finishing third in the 200 meters (25.65) at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. It is her first career weekly honor.
JUMPIN' JACKIE
Freshman Jacqueline Coleman won the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week award on Jan. 9 after taking first place in the triple jump at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6 with a distance of 11.29 meters. She followed that by finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 5.36 meters.
WILSON NAMED INTERIM HEAD COACH
Head cross country coach Judy Wilson was promoted to interim head women's track and field coach in December. She takes over for former director of track and field Randy Heisler, who resigned to take a position at Ball State. Wilson will continue to coach the women's distance runners.
Wilson is in her ninth season with the Hoosier coaching staff. Last year she guided Kelly Siefker to a ninth-place finish in the steeplechase at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
BIG TEN CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
During the 2006-07 season, the Big Ten will celebrate the conference's 25th Anniversary of Women's Championships.
From Aug. 15, 2006, to July 2007, the conference will be sharing some of the many stories of student-athletes, teams, coaches and administrators who have made the past 25 years a success and have set the stage for "the story to continue."
