COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 16th-ranked Indiana wrestling team was bested for the second straight dual meet, falling on the road to Ohio State, 19-14, on Sunday, Jan. 28. The Hoosiers are now 10-2 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten, while Ohio State is 6-4 with a 2-1 conference mark.
The Hoosiers won four of the 10 matchups on the day, with redshirt freshman Trevor Perry earning the only bonus points for Indiana at 174. No. 7 Brandon Becker (157), No. 9 Angel Escobedo (125) and Andrae Hernandez (133) also were victorious for IU on the day.
The match opened at 141, with J Jaggers taking a 6-1 decision over sophomore Scott Kelly to give the Buckeyes an early 3-0 lead. At 149, No. 12 Matt Coughlin took a 3-1 lead over No. 16 Lance Palmer into the third period, but Palmer started down in the third and escaped at the 1:49 mark. Palmer then registered the decisive takedown with 20 seconds remaining to claim the victory and put his squad up 6-0.
Becker rebounded for the Hoosiers at 157, using a second-period escape and takedown to grab a 3-0 lead heading into the third and went on to the 4-2 victory to cut the deficit in half. In the 165-pound bout, neither wrestler was able to score an offensive point, with each garnering one point for an escape in regulation. No. 14 Max Dean was unable to escape in his half of the tiebreak, while No. 16 Chris Vondruska earned a point by escaping with 10 seconds remaining to earn the 2-1 victory.
Perry helped the Hoosiers trim the deficit to one with a 19-4 technical fall of Ohio State's Tommy Priestly. Perry posted three takedowns and a pair of three-point near falls in the opening period to take a 12-2 lead, then two more takedowns and an escape in the second to earn five points and make the score 9-8. But No. 3 Mike Pucillo grabbed the points right back with an 18-6 major decision over No. 12 Marc Bennett at 184 to give OSU a 13-8 lead.
At 197, No. 7 J.D. Bergman scored a first-period takedown and held on for a 4-2 victory over true freshman Nathan Everhart. The Hoosiers had a strong opportunity to get points back at heavyweight, with Josh Buuck holding a 5-2 lead over Corey Morrison through two periods. But Morrison fought back with three takedowns in the third, including the decisive one with just one second remaining to grab a 9-7 victory and put OSU up 19-8. Indiana followed with victories by Escobedo and Hernandez at 125 and 133, respectively, but it was not enough to take the victory.
The Hoosiers are back in action this weekend as they host a pair of dual meets at University Gym. Top-ranked Minnesota comes to town on Friday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m., while non-conference foe North Carolina State visits Bloomington on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m.
