With Indiana's rowing team in Tampa, Fla., for its annual winter training trip from Dec. 31-Jan.6, members of the team will be checking in with IUHOOSIERS.com each day to share how the trip is going. Below is sophomore Ashley Johnson's account from the road.
We started our row with the rain spitting down on us from an overcast sky. After doing a lot of drills the past few practices, we were given a chance to row and really apply everything that we had been working on in the drills. Although it was exhausting remembering to stay focused on the changes we were making, everyone did a great job of working together. I think the morning row was very productive because everyone was really focused and we made a lot of improvements as a boat. It was a great opportunity for the boat to mesh together. Afterward, we all went back to the hotel to nurse our blisters and ice our sore muscles.
The evening row offered a little more excitement. We split up into boats and raced. The boats were composed of seasoned rowers as well as women that learned to row less than five months ago. The novice, those beginning their rowing careers, stepped it up just as much as everyone else. The best part of it was that the boats were neck and neck. Just when one boat had the lead, another would walk up and challenge it for first. It definitely hyped me up for spring racing!
