With Indiana's rowing team in Tampa, Fla., for its annual winter training trip from Dec. 31-Jan.6, members of the team will be checking in with IUHOOSIERS.com each day to share how the trip is going. Below is freshman Emily Kasavana's account from the road.
With two full days under our belt, Wednesday looked to be an extension of our daily routine. Practice started at 8 a.m. To our surprise, however, rain did not look likely. Under slightly cloudy skies, we had a long practice consisting of focused team rowing and intense sprints in an attempt to row at race pace efficiently. Somewhere between sprint segments, the sun began to shine and we were reminded that we were in Florida.
After practice, the team returned to the hotel to our usual brunch in our private dining hall, when it dawned on many of us that today's schedule was slightly different. With Wednesday afternoon practice cancelled, rowers seemed to enjoy the many attractions of Tampa.
Some stayed around the hotel to sit by the pool and catch a few rays or sleep. Others ventured into Tampa to sightsee and, of course, shop. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing afternoon to rest up and prepare to make the most of our practices for the rest of the week.
Tomorrow looks to be slightly worse weather conditions, but the level of rowing will undoubtedly continue to improve as we plan to increase speed and maintain a focus on technique. All of us have enjoyed our time in Tampa and are looking toward a promising winter training.
