COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Indiana University women's water polo team closed out the second day of the Terrapin Invitational with a 10-5 loss to Princeton at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on Sunday, Feb. 18.
"We did a lot of things today that we can build on," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We'll take the next two weeks to get some rest and practice and go out to San Jose a better, stronger team."
Princeton controlled the water from the beginning, scoring the first goal of the contest with 2:44 left to play in the first period. The Tigers added three more goals in the second quarter to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. After one more goal from the Tigers to open the third quarter, the Hoosiers got on the board on a tally from Brooke Zimmerman off of a pass from Claire Nicholson with 6:28 left in the third frame. Two more Princeton goals put the Tigers up 7-1, but Emily Schmitt scored with 1:29 left to put the Hoosiers on the board again.
After Zimmerman was awarded a penalty shot, Kara Woolley took the penalty shot and connected to score with just nine second left on the clock in the third quarter. Melissa Soria and Jaclyn Tameris each tallied a goal for the Hoosiers in the closing frame, but it was not enough to combat the Princeton offense, as the Tigers scored three times to take the game, 10-5.
For the game, five different Hoosiers tallied one goal apiece (Woolley, Zimmerman, Soria, Schmitt and Tameris), while Zimmerman had two assists and three steals. In the cage for IU, Katie Carson had six saves and two steals in the loss.
The Hoosiers will be in action next when they head west to take on San Jose State on March 10. The two teams will face off at 3 p.m. EST.
