Hoosiers Drop Heartbreaker To Hartwick, 12-11

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Indiana University women's water polo team opened the second day of the Terrapin Invitational with a 12-11 loss to Hartwick at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on Sunday, Feb. 18.
The Hoosiers opened the game with an early 3-0 lead off of goals by Emily Schmitt, Melissa Soria and Brooke Zimmerman in the first frame. However, Hartwick closed out the period with four goals to take the 4-3 advantage heading into the second period.
Hartwick opened the second frame with another score, but Zimmerman scored again to bring the Hawks lead to just one, 5-4. Another goal by Hartwick and then two tallies by the Hoosiers, one each from Zimmerman and Soria in the closing minutes, knotted the score at 6-6 heading into the break.
IU controlled the third frame, as Zimmerman scored twice and Soria added one more goal with 3:09 left in the frame to take a 9-7 lead entering the final period. Soria scored twice more to open the fourth frame, once on a pass from Kristin Zernicke and again off an assist by Kara Woolley, giving the Hoosiers an 11-7 advantage with 6:34 to play.
Hartwick answered the Hoosier offense with four goals of their own to tie the score at 11-11 with just one minute left in the game. With time ticking off the clock, Hartwick brought the ball down to the IU end and Kristen Hudson scored as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Zimmerman and Soria each scored five goals in the loss for Indiana and Zernicke dished out two assists. Zimmerman, Woolley and Jackie Pyrz each assisted on two of IU's goals. In the cage, Pyrz had eight saves and four steals.
The Hoosiers will wrap up the Terrapin Invitational by taking on Princeton at 11:45 a.m.
