MADISON, Wis. - The Indiana wrestling team got a crucial victory from No. 7 Brandon Becker, but came up short at No. 9 Wisconsin, 21-13. Indiana finishes the regular season at 13-5 with a 4-4 mark in the Big Ten. Wisconsin finishes the year 19-3 with a 5-3 mark in the conference.
Becker got IU's first victory of the day, when he shut out No. 5 Craig Henning at 157. The two-time All-American scored a second-period reversal after starting down, then rode Henning for the entirety of the third period to notch a 3-0 victory. It marks the second time Becker has topped Henning this season, as the junior beat his adversary 4-2 in the semifinals at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 2, 2006. Becker is now 25-5 heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Redshirt freshmen Trevor Perry (174) and Angel Escobedo (125) also tallied key victories for the Hoosiers, while junior Marc Bennett (184) won for the first time in three matches. Perry, who suffered his first Big Ten loss on Friday, rebounded with a 20-10 major decision over Mike Felling to finish 7-1 in conference action on the year. Bennett's third-period reversal gave him an 8-7 win over No. 17 Trevor Brandvold and brought the Hoosiers within five points at 15-10.
Nathan Everhart (197) nearly upset No. 12 Dallas Herbst, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first period, but Herbst rallied with a third-round takedown and a stalling point to win the match 5-4 with riding time. Kyle Massey sealed the victory for UW with a 13-6 decision over Josh Buuck at heavyweight.
At 125, ninth-ranked Escobedo finished off his season in winning fashion, scoring a 2-0 victory over Colin Cudd. After Friday night's win over No. 7 Franklin Gomez of Michigan State, Escobedo wrapped up his regular season at 30-4, becoming the first Hoosier since Pat DeGain (HWT), in 2004-05, to score 30 or more victories in a season.
The match started at 133, where No. 20 Andrae Hernandez suffered a tough loss to No. 14 Zach Tanelli. Hernandez held a 4-2 lead heading into the third period, but Tanelli started down, scored a reversal with one minute left, and then was able to pin the sophomore at the 6:30 mark to put UW up 6-0. The Badgers expanded their lead at 141, as #15 Kyle Ruschell posted an 8-3 decision over Scott Kelly. No. 11 Tyler Turner followed with an 8-2 decision over No. 19 Matt Coughlin.
Indiana is back in action at the Big Ten Championships, on March 3-4, in East Lansing, Mich.
