WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana's women's swimming team sent a small contingent to Purdue's Boiler-Make-It, a last chance meet held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on Feb. 17-18.
Brittany Barwegen, Kristin Cihoski, Abby Cooper, Christie Fuchs and Amilee Smith all competed at the event, along with swimmers from Purdue, Northwestern and Illinois.
Cihoski turned in a time of 2:03.76 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley, good for an NCAA "B" cut and not far off her pace at the Big Ten Championships last weekend. Her time was tops in the prelims.
Smith also turned in the top time in the prelims in her event, taking the 500-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 4:56.03.
Cooper turned in a time of 1:03.55, exactly on the "B" cut. She posted two faster times at Big Tens.
Barwegen shaved 0.07 seconds off her career-best time in the 200-yard butterfly, touching in 2:00.48 to win the preliminary heat. Fuchs was fifth in the heat with a time of 2:06.45.
Indiana did not compete in the finals.
"I think it was an important meet to do," Indiana assistant coach Pam Swander said. "Simply because these particular women felt like there was just a little left in the tank. Brittany Barwegen was just that much faster, which put her a step closer to her ultimate goal. We went back to training and went back to work, and I think they're going home satisfied with their performances and their season."
Cihoski, Emma Berry, Cassie Luhrsen and Donna Smailis will compete on Feb. 18 at the Boiler-Make-It.
Back in Bloomington, several remaining members of the squad participated in the IU Last Chance on Feb. 17. The meet was an intrasquad meet in which several swimmers swam in off events.
