BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana wrestling team was defeated by NC State 22-18, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at University Gym. The Hoosiers are now 10-4 on the season, while NC State is 8-7 on the year.
No. 9 Angel Escobedo earned his 12th pin of the season in the match, while Brandon Becker, Max Dean, Trevor Perry and Marc Bennett also earned victories. NC State earned a pair of pins and a major decision to take the upset victory.
Escobedo opened the match by pinning Taylor Cummings at the 3:45 mark to get IU out to a quick 6-0 lead. But NCSU bounced back with a pin of its own at 133, as Garrett Cummings used a first period reversal to position himself on top, then pinned Hernandez at the 1:20 mark to bring the score even at 6-6.
At 141, Darrion Caldwell earned bonus points of his own with a major decision over Scott Kelly, 10-2, then Joe Caramanica responded with an upset victory over No. 18 Matt Coughlin. Down 13-6, No. 7 Brandon Becker earned a crucial 9-4 decision over No. 19 Kody Hamrah with four points in each of the first two periods.
No. 16 Max Dean bounced back from four consecutive losses with an enormous 3-2 victory over Obie Simpson in the second tiebreak period. Dean earned three escape points in the match to Simpson's one, but Simpson got an additional point on a Dean stalling violation in the first tiebreak period. Trevor Perry added to the IU lead with an 11-6 win over Rick Brownlee at 174, and nearly pinned his opposition just 20 seconds in, but Brownlee was able to escape to extend the match.
At 184, Bennett earned a crucial victory, using a third-period comeback to take an 11-9 victory and give IU an 18-13 lead. No. 15 Ryan Goodman followed by pinning IU's Nathan Everhart in the second period, and it all came down to the heavyweight bout. Josh Buuck held a late 3-2 lead over No. 10 Jainor Palma, but Palma earned a takedown with under 10 seconds to go, and took a 4-3 victory to give the Wolfpack the match.
The Hoosiers will be in action next weekend when they play host to Michigan and Northwestern at University Gym. IU faces Michigan on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. EST, and Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.
