As Indiana's rowing team takes part in its annual Spring Break training trip in Clemson, S.C., select members of the team will be checking in with IUHOOSIERS.com to relay how the trip is going. The first journal entry from the trip comes from senior Laura Stebbins.
Sunday, March 11th, 2007:
Today began the first full day of our spring training trip here in Clemson, S.C. After long months of indoor training on the ergs it was great to finally have oars in our hands and be back on the water. Everyone's spirits seemed to be lifted as we were rigging the boats before our morning row. Once we got on the water, the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful morning to be on the lake. The rowers who worked with Coach Peterson went out in fours to get back into the swings of things. We worked on technique and power behind every stroke. Coach Peterson also took the opportunity to take some video of all the rowers, which is a very helpful learning tool. After a practice full of solid rowing, we all boarded the bus and headed to the Clemson dining hall for lunch.
During the afternoon row, we got into an eight and did some competitive rowing against Coach Mirochna's crews. It's always a great feeling to have your teammates in a boat next to you pushing you to go faster. We did a total of four trips up and down the race course working on different things for each one. Having the opportunity to practice on the course we'll be racing on this weekend is amazing. With such little time on the water before our first race, every little advantage is going to count. This is going to be an exciting season for Indiana Rowing. We have a very strong team this year with the majority of girls all competing for seats in the top boats. This kind of intrateam competition is turning us all into better rowers because we really have to work for our seats. It should be a great week!
