Spring Break Rowing Diary: Laura Fuhrmann

As Indiana's rowing team takes part in its annual Spring Break training trip in Clemson, S.C., select members of the team will be checking in with IUHOOSIERS.com to relay how the trip is going. The team will train in Clemson from March 10-16, and will race Clemson, Marist and Purdue on Saturday, March 17. Friday's journal entry comes courtesy of sophomore Laura Fuhrmann.
The morning started off rainy and gloomy for our last day of practice before our first race of the season. Although the rain didn't seem to damper any spirits on the team, we are all excited to get out on the water and see what we can do compared to other teams. The first race seems to be mixed with anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of apprehension. Many of us have experience, but the line-ups are a mix of novice and varsity, so this is an opportunity for the varsity to guide the newest members of our team through their first race. This is a chance for us to see if all the hard work we put in during winter training will pay off and help us gain boat speed and victory.
Practice this morning consisted of a 1,250-meter race piece for Coach Peterson's boat. We were all excited to see if we could stick to the plan and improve on our time from Wednesday's piece. Since racing that piece on Wednesday our boat has been focusing on really working together and maintaining boat feel. With eight rowers, it takes a lot of concentration and discipline to make each stroke count. As we finished our warm-up and got ready to start the piece, Coach Peterson reminded us what our boat wanted to do. All nine of us were eager and ready to really see if we could apply what we had been practicing all week to this 1,250-meter piece. After the 1,250-meter piece, we were all very excited, as it went well and it was a great way to end a week of hard work at practice. It is really great to see how much we have improved from day to day. Looking at Sunday compared to today, there have been many improvements, both individually as well the entire boat.
Now with the afternoon off, we are all ready to rest and relax while gearing up for a great race tomorrow. Collectively the Hoosiers are mixing the anticipation, excitement, and apprehension to race our first competitors of the season as a team. Go Hoosiers!
