Hoosiers Host Group On National Sportsmanship Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ten members of the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington joined several Indiana University student-athletes in celebrating National Sportsmanship Day on Tuesday, March 6.
"This is the first year that we've celebrated National Sportsmanship Day," Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services Mattie White said. "I thought it was a great opportunity, because our student-athletes carry themselves in a great manner both on and off the field and this way, they can let the area youth know about the importance of sportsmanship."
The group, which had participated in a poster contest using the sportsmanship theme, were given a tour of Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium by football player Kenny Kendal. Along the way, the youths had the opportunity to meet student-athletes, administrators and coaches.
After the tour, the group was treated to a pizza party where student-athletes such as women's basketball player Leah Enterline, wrestler Andrae Hernandez, football players Jahkeen Gilmore, Charlie Emerson and John Sandberg, men's soccer player Kevin Noschang and women's track and field athlete Lorian Price discussed the importance of sportsmanship and answered questions after awarding prizes to the top posters.
"It was a lot of fun," Kendal said of his experience giving the tour and interacting with the group. "They all have so much energy, and teaching them sportsmanship is a really big deal. It's something that is important when playing sports but it is also an important aspect of life."
